Stopping the Chewing Problems of Puppies
Pet owners who would like to work on stopping the chewing problems of puppies have to understand first
that this behavior is just but natural for dogs at whatever age. Puppies tend to chew whatever they can get
their teeth on because they may be bored or they are undergoing the teething stage. Pet owners do not exactly
stop the chewing problem but they are actually redirecting it. They have to give their dogs various things or
toys that they can chew instead of their puppies finding things on their own such as carpets, slippers,
cushions, or other things that they are not supposed to chew.
Importance of Stopping Puppy
Pet owners tend to be lax with their puppies because they look adorable and they just let them chew on
anything that they like. They do not make any effort in correcting the behavior. However, some pet owners yell
or scold their puppies and this kind of reaction confuses their dogs which cause them to develop other negative
behaviors. Pet owners may instead show that the chewing problems of puppies are not acceptable and they can also
provide other alternatives to divert their attention from this behavior.
Correcting the Chewing
Problems of Puppies
There are various things that pet owners can do in correcting or stopping the chewing problems of
puppies. The first thing that they should do is to refrain from yelling or hitting their puppies if they display
such behavior. People have to control their anger and they should not vent it out on their pets. This will only
confuse them and they would not know and understand that what they did was wrong. Pet owners may instead
consider other positive actions when dealing with it.
Behavior Modification – In stopping the chewing problems of puppies, pet owners may instead teach them
to chew on toys or things that they provide. When they see that their puppies are chewing on their slippers,
they have to take it away but they need to replace it with a chew toy. This action will teach puppies that there
are some things that they may be allowed to chew on.
Keeping Puppies Busy – Pet owners have to see to it that their puppies have other activities that would
prevent them from getting bored. Puppies that are not undergoing teething will still chew on things if they have
nothing else to do. Pet owners have to keep their puppies from boredom. They can do this by playing and by
letting their dogs do some exercises especially when they are at home. Pet owners who have to leave their
puppies at home have to provide some interesting toys for them to play with on their
Crate Training – Stopping the chewing problems of puppies may also be done through crate training. Pet
owners can keep their dogs in their crates every time that they need to leave them at home so that their pets do
not have access to important personal items or things at home.
Aversion Sprays – When puppies start chewing things at home, pet owners can make use of safe sprays on
them such as bitter apple or even cayenne pepper in order to stop them from this behavior. The puppies may
refrain from chewing carpets and slippers especially if they are able to associate it with the bad taste that
was sprayed on them.
Although chewing is a normal behavior among dogs in general, it should not be destructive as this
behavior can be redirected to toys instead of home things. If the chewing problems in puppies are directed to
important possessions at home, pet owners have to shift their attention to their dog toys
In stopping the chewing problems of puppies, pet owners have to maintain consistency in all of their
actions. People should not allow their puppies to start chewing on their slippers or socks especially if they
just leave them anywhere in the house. Pet owners also have to refrain from letting them play with stuffed toys
because the puppies would not know if nibbling or chewing them will be allowed. Pet owners have to stick with
their ground rules and they should be followed. Doing this will help pet owners in stopping the chewing problems
of puppies while their pets are still very young.
